A Destination Wedding: M&J's Journey to Richmond, BC

Quick Summary: Meant and Jason flew 12,000 kilometers from Thailand to Richmond, BC to get married. No large reception, no elaborate production. Just the two of them, a minimalist ceremony space five minutes from the airport, and a legal union that crossed an ocean. At Somethink Studio, we documented their day at The Ensora Ceremony Space in Richmond and walked them through every step of getting legally married in British Columbia as visitors. If you are an overseas couple considering a destination elopement in Vancouver, this post covers both the story and the practical reality of making it happen.

Meant and Jason had already built a life together long before they boarded a plane to Canada. The trip from Thailand was not the beginning of their story. It was the moment they decided to make it official, and they wanted to do it on their own terms.

There was no wedding party. No family flown in. No guests filling rows of chairs. It was just the two of them inside The Ensora Ceremony Space in Richmond, with the Somethink Studio team standing beside them as their official witnesses. Four people in the room. That was exactly what they wanted.

There is something particular about documenting a ceremony like this. When there is no audience, the moment belongs entirely to the couple. Nobody is watching them for cues. Nobody needs to be managed or directed. The room gets very still, and what you are left with is two people who have chosen each other over a long time and a long distance, finally saying it out loud.

Our role was to hold that stillness and not disturb it.

The Venue and the Team

Planning an overseas elopement requires an enormous amount of trust in people you have never met in person. M&J built a vendor team that made their vision feel effortless.

The Ensora Ceremony Space, Richmond BC

For a couple flying in from Asia, logistics matter as much as aesthetics. The Ensora Ceremony Space, located within the International Trade Center at 8477 Bridgeport Road in Richmond, is one of the most practical venues in Greater Vancouver for international couples. It sits five minutes from YVR International Airport and twenty minutes from Downtown Vancouver, which means less time managing transit on an already full day. For guests arriving without a car, the venue is a five-minute walk from Capstan SkyTrain Station.

The space itself is what drew M&J in: high-end minimalism, clean lines, and an atmosphere that lets the people in the room be the focus.

Vancity Officiant

Navigating the legalities of marrying in a foreign country is one of the most common concerns we hear from overseas couples. Working with an experienced team like Vancity Officiant removes that uncertainty entirely. They specialize in personalized ceremonies for couples from diverse backgrounds, and they handle the legal paperwork required for international unions so you do not have to.

Planning a Vancouver Elopement from Asia: What You Actually Need to Know

Visa and Entry Requirements

Before booking your flights, confirm which travel document applies to your passport.

Citizens of visa-exempt countries including Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, and Taiwan require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Citizens of Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China require a Visitor Visa (TRV). Processing times for visitor visas vary significantly, so plan well in advance.

As immigration policies change, always verify the latest requirements on the official Government of Canada website before confirming your travel dates.

Somethink Studio note: For our Thai and other visa-required couples, we recommend beginning the visa application process at least 3-4 months before your planned wedding date. We provide a Photography Confirmation Letter to support your application, which documents your scheduled event in Vancouver as part of your travel purpose.

Obtaining Your BC Marriage License

The BC marriage license process is straightforward for overseas couples.

Apply within 3 months of your ceremony date. You can obtain a license from any authorized issuer, including London Drugs locations in Richmond and Vancouver. Both partners need government photo ID (passports). The license costs $100 CAD, is issued immediately on the spot, and requires no waiting period or medical tests.

Somethink Studio note: We recommend the CIS Insurance Brokers at Lansdowne Centre in Richmond. It is a ten-minute drive from The Ensora, which makes it a practical first stop after you land and clear customs.

For current details on authorized issuers and operating hours, visit the BC Marriage License page on the Government of BC website before your arrival day, as locations and hours are subject to change.

The Ceremony Requirement

In BC, your ceremony must be performed by a registered officiant. You also need two witnesses present. If you are eloping without guests, the Somethink Studio team is honoured to stand as your official witnesses.
